Surfing Zippers Beach in Cabo: A Guide to the Famous Break
A Surfer's Guide to Zippers Beach, San Jose del Cabo
If you’re a surfer visiting San Jose del Cabo, you’ve heard of Zippers. It’s the most high-performance wave in the area and home to the annual WSL Los Cabos Open of Surf. It’s a world-class wave, but it’s not for everyone. Here’s the local scoop.
The Wave
Zippers is a fast, rocky, right-hand point break. On a good summer south swell, the wave starts breaking way outside, zips along the rocks, and can offer long, rippable walls for intermediate to advanced surfers. The takeoff spot is well-defined, and the inside section can get shallow.
- Wave Type: Right-hand point break
- Bottom: Rocks and reef
- Best Swell: South, Southeast
- Best Season: Summer (May - September)
The Crowd
This is the most important factor at Zippers: it is the most crowded and localized spot in the area. The local surfers, many of whom are professionals or top amateurs, rule the peak. If you paddle out here, you need to bring your best surfing and your best etiquette.
- Be Respectful: Do not paddle to the top of the peak and take the first wave you see. Sit on the inside, be patient, and wait your turn.
- Know the Rules: Understand priority and right-of-way. If you drop in on a local, you will be told about it.
- Don't Go If You're a Beginner: This is not a beginner wave. The rocks, the crowd, and the power of the wave make it unsuitable for learning. Head down the beach to the Acapulquito (Old Man's) break instead.
The Vibe
The beach at Zippers is a great place to hang out, even if you’re not surfing. The main landmark is the Zippers Bar & Grill, a classic surf bar right on the sand. It’s the perfect place to grab a bucket of beers and some nachos and watch the action in the water.
