Day Trip to Cabo San Lucas from San Jose: A Perfect Itinerary
The Perfect Day Trip: Cabo San Lucas from San Jose del Cabo
San Jose del Cabo is our home and our favorite place in Baja, known for its relaxed, artistic vibe. But no trip to the area is complete without at least a day trip to its more energetic sister city, Cabo San Lucas. Here’s our recommended itinerary for a perfect day.
Getting There
Cabo San Lucas is about a 20-30 minute drive from San Jose del Cabo along the main highway. You can take a taxi, an Uber, or the local bus (the SuburCabo). For a family or group, Uber is often the most convenient and cost-effective option.
Morning (9:00 AM - 1:00 PM): The Arch & Water Taxi
Start your day at the Cabo San Lucas Marina. This is the bustling heart of the city. From here, you can hire a water taxi (a small boat called a panga) to take you out to Land’s End to see the iconic Arch (El Arco).
- The Tour: The boat ride takes about 45-60 minutes. The driver will take you past the sea lion colony, show you the Arch from both sides, and point out Lover’s Beach and Divorce Beach.
- Tip: Negotiate the price before you get on the boat. You shouldn’t pay more than $15-20 USD per person.
Afternoon (1:00 PM - 5:00 PM): Medano Beach
After your boat tour, head to Medano Beach. This is the main swimming beach in Cabo San Lucas, and it’s a scene. The water is calm, and the beach is lined with lively restaurants and bars where you can rent a lounge chair and an umbrella.
- Where to Go: The Office on the Beach is the most famous spot, known for its blue tables in the sand and strong margaritas. It’s a great place for lunch and people-watching.
- Activities: You can rent jet skis, paddleboards, or just relax and swim in the calm water.
Evening (5:00 PM onwards): Sunset & Dinner
For sunset, you have two amazing options:
- Sunset Cruise: Board one of the many sunset cruise boats that leave from the marina. They range from booze cruises to more relaxed sailing trips. It’s a classic Cabo experience.
- Sunset Monalisa: For a more romantic and upscale experience, make a reservation at Sunset Monalisa. It’s a stunning restaurant carved into a cliffside with the best sunset views in all of Los Cabos. It’s a splurge, but unforgettable.
After sunset, head back to the quiet and calm of San Jose del Cabo, your perfect home base.
