san jose del cabo vacation rentals

As the chill of winter envelops colder regions, the allure of sun-soaked beaches becomes irresistible. For those who love surfing and relaxing by the ocean, San Jose del Cabo offers the perfect escape. At Las Olas, we invite you to explore not only the beauty of our vacation rentals but also the scientific benefits of sunshine.

The Power of Sunshine: A Scientific Perspective

Vitamin D Production

Sunlight is essential for our bodies to produce Vitamin D, a critical nutrient that many people lack, especially in colder climates. When UVB rays hit the skin, they trigger a complex process that converts cholesterol into Vitamin D. This vitamin plays a pivotal role in maintaining bone health by facilitating calcium absorption, boosting our immune system, and regulating mood.

Research indicates that adequate Vitamin D levels can reduce the risk of various health issues, including osteoporosis, heart disease, and even some cancers. A sunny beach getaway provides an excellent opportunity to replenish your Vitamin D stores naturally, enhancing your overall health.

Mood Enhancement

Have you ever noticed how your mood lifts on a sunny day? Sunlight exposure increases serotonin levels in the brain, a neurotransmitter associated with feelings of happiness and well-being. Studies show that individuals exposed to more sunlight tend to report higher levels of happiness and life satisfaction.

Surfing is not just a sport; it's a way of life. It's about connecting with nature, challenging yourself, and, perhaps most importantly, respecting the ocean and your fellow surfers. Proper surf etiquette is crucial for maintaining a safe and enjoyable surfing experience for everyone in the lineup. Whether you're a seasoned pro or just starting out, here are seven essential tips for mastering surf etiquette:

1. Respect the Locals: When surfing at a new spot, always show respect to the locals. Understand that surfing is often deeply ingrained in local culture, and it's a privilege to surf their waves. Avoid any sense of entitlement and be mindful of local customs and rules. Respect the lineup, wait your turn, and you'll earn the respect of the locals in return.

2. Respect the Right of Way (Priority): The golden rule of surfing etiquette is to respect the right of way. The person closest to the peak of the wave always has priority. It doesn't matter how many waves they've caught; if they're in the best position to catch the wave, it's theirs. Remember, the deepest surfer has the right of way. This is one of the perks of being the best surfer; they have put in the most time and had to work to be able to take off so deep. The deepest surfer has earned the respect to be able to have priority.

Having your own vehicle means you can have the freedom to be on your own schedule. Every minute of the day counts when you’re visiting a new destinations, and when you only have a limited number of days, it’s not exactly ideal to spend hours on buses and trying to hail a cab. Public transport can often take double the time to get somewhere because of the many stops and transfers. Although Uber is very cheap in Mexico, there are limitations and less peace of mind having to rely on someone else to get you from point A to point B.

Limitations to Uber in Mexico

  • No Airport pickups or dropoffs

  • Only three people per Uber

Low Cost and Affordability

Renting a vehicle helps you travel at your own leisure. More often than not, it is often the most cost efficient way of getting around, even with the car insurance and gas factored in.

Comfort is also a huge reason to rent a car in Baja. Having the freedom to listen to your own music, blast the AC and explore different areas is a blessing when the sun is blazing and roads are busy.

If you are a surfer looking to explore Baja for uncrowded waves, we recommend a 4 wheel drive vehicle. If you plan on staying in the city, two wheel drive will be great.

los cabos

It can get a bit confusing when traveling to Mexico when there are so many different Cabos. This article is here to bring more clarity and make sure you book the trip in the location that best suits your needs.

Los Cabos

Los Cabos is the whole region of the southern tip of Baja. Los Cabos includes both Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. It’s like saying you are from San Diego even if you live in Ocean Beach. When people say they are going to Cabo, they are most likely talking about Cabo San Lucas.

Whats the Difference Between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo?

There are many differences between CSL and SJD. CSL is a spring break destination located on the southernmost tip of Baja. It’s for the people looking for a good time, and more of the nightlife party scene. The bars are open all night and the party never stops in Cabo. There are tons of activities in Cabo such as a yacht charter to see the Arches, sunset cruise, parasailing, ATV excursions, and riding camels on the beach. You name the adventure, and CSL most likely can deliver.

San Jose del Cabo, on the other hand, is a more quaint town with cobblestone streets and a more family-friendly atmosphere. SJD is where most people fly into and this is the main hub for surfers. There are four famous surf breaks directly in front of Las Olas for surfers of all levels. Zippers is for advanced surfers, as there have been surfing competitions held there and it is more of a local spot. The Rock is for advanced to intermediate surfers and then Middles and Old Man’s is perfect for beginners and longboarders. There is an Art Walk in Downtown San Jose del Cabo every Thursday night and tons of great restaurants and bars to enjoy. There are beautiful beachfront restaurants such as Pescadito Break within walking distance of Las Olas. There are also activities in San Jose such as fishing, ATVs, and swimming with dolphins. When booking with us, our team provides a Welcome Book with detailed lists of places to go in SJD. Click Here to See our Availability.

Barbers for Baja

It all started with one toy drive back in 2019 at the Kings Club Barbershop in Dana Point, California. A group of barbers decided to promote a toy drive for La Misión in Baja California and everyone was blown away by the number of donations that came through. The next year they decided to participate in the same toy drive again, and this time decided to promote the toy drive at other barber shops in the surrounding areas as well. In a short 30 days, the barbershop communities raised over $7k in toys and funds for the children of La Misión.

This positive momentum inspired the barbers to find even more ways to help not only the people of La Misión but also surrounding communities throughout Baja. Their mission is to help children all across Baja have better access to food, education, medical supplies, and happiness through one-on-one connections.

Through fundraising and events in the US and Baja, Barbers for Baja distributes food to multiple food banks, organizations, and families in the area. They collect medical supplies and materials for Baja firefighters, EMT’s and medical volunteers. But their main focus is providing children access to better education through their B4B Scholarship Program.

*Attack the Wave*

Although it may seem scary at first, it is in your best interest to attack the wave and paddle towards the pocket. Instead of waiting for the wave to come to you, you can generate more speed and have much more control when you attack the wave. It is much scarier to turn your back to the wave and wait for it to catch up to you instead of facing it head on and becoming one.

*Look to Where You Want To Go*

Wherever your eyes are, that is where you will end up. It is very important to look down the face of the wave to find the best line to take. A lot of beginners make the mistake of looking straight, which leads you into the white water instead of on the wave itself.

*Arch Your Back and Stay Low on the Pop-Up*

When first starting out, the pop-up is one of the more difficult maneuvers to perfect. It is crucial to find your positioning on the board and arch your back at the take-off so that you do not pearl your board. Trust your equipment and know that the board will be there to support you and your weight. Pop Up straight to your feet and you’re off to the races!

*Stay High and Open Your Chest*

Every wave is different but it is usually the case to stay high on the wave after taking off to ensure you make the first section. It is very helpful to open your chest to the face of the wave and look to hit the lip by the pocket before the sections close out on you.

Private - Airport Shuttle - Rental Car - Uber - Taxis

There are many different forms of transportation in Los Cabos. Your options are private transportation, shared shuttle service, rental car, uber or a taxi. All are great options depending on what you are looking for.

Once you step out of the SJD Airport, you will be surrounded by a sea of people and a lot of stimulation. There are two bars steps outside of the airport, loud music, and hundreds of shuttle services trying to get your business. No matter what option you choose, we highly recommend getting everything planned beforehand so that you know exactly where to go and who to meet outside of the airport.

The best and most reliable form of transportation is private transportation, which is around $150 roundtrip. These services come with A/C, cold beverages and VIP professional service. You will be given specific instructions (with videos) of how to navigate the airport and exactly where to meet your driver. Most private services also will stop at the mega grocery store for an additional charge.

The airport shuttle service is a more affordable option, however, the downside is it is shared with other people and you may have to wait a very long time for the shuttle to fill up. We have heard of services for less than $20 per person - it will just take some research and make sure to schedule one with lots of reviews.

Travel insurance is one of the most important investments we can make while traveling and it is often overlooked. What people don’t realize is that things can happen outside of our control and can go wrong. You would never buy a house without insurance, or drive a vehicle without insurance so why would you not consider insurance when traveling? Accidents can happen and if/when they do occur, it’s best to have insurance in place that could not only save your bank account, but also save your life!

At Let’s Do Mexico, we choose to adopt the mindset that if you have it, you won’t need to use it. And if you do need to use it, you’re grateful for your foresight to prioritize your health, safety and finances. Even before a global pandemic was going on, it was always a good idea to purchase travel insurance. Now that Covid-19 has made its presence known throughout the world, it is crucial that you buy travel insurance during these uncertain times. One thing that Covid has taught us is that the universe is unpredictable, and that the rules apply to each and every one of us. You never expect the worst case scenario to happen to you but if it does, it's better to be prepared and not have any regrets over heavy expenses that could have easily been avoided.

Surfing is a mentally and physically challenging sport, and can take a lifetime to master. One thing that a surfer must have in order to be successful is dedication. It’s a dedication to yourself to keep pushing and learning to love the beatdown. No matter what level of surfer you are, it's crucial for your muscle memory to constantly be practicing your pop up and balance, in and out of the water. The Revolution Swell 2.0 is one of the best tools for surfers of all levels to improve. For similar products, please visit the Revolution 101 Balance Board or the Core Balance Board Trainer. It’s difficult finding ways to continue to practice surfing when you’re out of the water but one helpful thing could be a longboard skateboard which gives a similar feeling and experience as surfing. Surf skateboards are a great way to keep active and engaged if the waves are flat. Longboard skateboards are the easiest skateboards to start with and closely resemble surfing. For a more advanced skater, there is the smaller Penny Board which takes more balance and control. If the kids want to practice in the backyard or at a local park, they could always set up the Swufer Swing to hang from a tree and mess around with.

Baja has a vast compilation of sea life and it's important to stay safe and mindful of possible situations. After living in Baja for 8 months, I can unfortunately say that I've personally stepped on all of the creatures mentioned below. For your protection, we recommend that before coming to Baja, your kids use water shoes, surf booties, rashguard (girls) (boys), and/or a wetsuit.

Sea Urchins: Sea urchins are like the porcupines of the sea. They are dark purple and have long spines that can easily prick you. They are easily breakable but can be a pain in the you know what to get out. The spines sometimes break under your skin and it can be a meticulous process to get them out safely. It is important to make sure there are no pieces left in the site, as it may lead to infection.

What to do if you step on or get pricked by one? Use alcohol to clean the area. Pull the urchin out with a pair of tweezers. Use a needle to scrape around the edges of the urchin and squeeze the little piece out. If you can't squeeze it out, keep picking around the piece and leave it in overnight. It should gradually fall out and if it doesn't after a couple of days, get a sea urchin sting kit to get it out.
